Is nail placement really that important?
To ensure your roof investment lasts as long as possible, it is important the nails are installed correctly. The nails must not be installed too deep and must be installed at the correct height. Incorrect installation can lead to roof failure and a voided warranty.
Good installation
#1 - Nails are nailed into the roof at the correct depth
#2 - Each nail goes through 2 layers of shingles
Bad Installation
#1 - nails are set too deep and are no longer holding shingles onto the roof
#2 - Nails only go through 1 layer of shingle instead of two
Full and Partial sheeting replacement
Older homes can have roof decking that has deteriorated and is in need of replacement. If the decking is week and failing, it should be replaced at the same time as the shingles.
A quick way a homeowner can tell if the decking needs to be replaced is to look for "waves" on the roof decking.
